Today was an exciting day in Kindergarten. We had a special virtual visit with Canadian author Marty Chan. We were so engaged by his storytelling!  During his storytelling, we got to act out parts of the story with him. He told us about writing the story,  True Story . Ask your child about how he came to write True Story.  We played a card game called War. Please practice this game at home.  Divide a deck of cards in half (remove any face cards) Flip over the top card. You must say the number you flip over. Then the player with the higher number must say ___ is bigger than ___  and takes the cards and discards them to the side. Play until you have no more cards in your pile. To challenge ourselves we flipped over two cards at once and practiced counting on from the biggest number.  We had library exchange, music and gym outside today.  On Tuesday February 2nd , we will be having a virtual field trip to the Calgary Zoo. We will be visiting and learning about the penguins. For the field

Please note:  tomorrow we will be outside for gym.  Please make sure your child has their snowpants with them - thanks! Today we worked on the letter H. We cut out hearts to place in the letter H and practiced writing it. Can you find things at your house that begin with the letter Hh? We continued working on our research booklets and learned about the penguins diet. We watched a video and saw how penguins find their food. Ask your child about what penguins like to eat.  We played math games to practice our counting skills. We watched a peace assembly. Ask your child to tell you about it.  We had gym with Mr. Der . What skill did your child practice today? Please remember to bring back your child's coloured home reading folder tomorrow.    Please remember when recording books on the book log for home reading, please record only those titles that are in your child's colored folder.   Library exchange tomorrow.  There is NO school on Friday as it is a professional development day

Today was a super day at school.  We started the day by drawing and writing in our journals.  We continue to work on 5 star drawing, creating pictures that are detailed with colors that make sense.  We are trying to write the beginning sounds we hear in words and some of us are writing sentences to go with our pictures. We learned about the life cycle of the penguin today.  We read the story The Emperor's Egg by Martin Jenkins. We talked about each stage of the life cycle.  Then we all became dad penguins and had a penguin egg (a bean bag) to take care of.  We learned that it is very hard to be a dad penguin carrying your egg on your feet wherever you go. We had centers today.  Please ask your child what center they played with. We played in the gym with Mr. Der today. There is no school on Friday as it is a PD day. We hope everyone had a chance to read some of their home reading last night!

Today we are starting our home reading program. Your child will come home with a coloured folder and 3 books to read over the next few nights. We ask that you send back the coloured folder e v ery THURSDAY.   In order for our home reading program to work we ask that you please send back the books on Thursday so that we have enough books to go around for all of the children. We need the books to quarantine over the weekend so that we can send them back out with students on Monday. We appreciate your cooperation. In the coloured folder you will find a notice about the home reading, a reading log, some helpful tips about reading with your child and 3 books. Please choose one story per night and log in on the record sheet. You may read that story multiple times but please only record it once on the sheet.  Today we started our penguin research booklet. We reviewed the body parts and labelling of the penguin. Ask your child to name the body parts on a penguin. We did a science experiment

Happy Friday Everyone! Today was a fabulous Friday at school.  We wrote in our journals today.   We drew pictures of something we like and then tried to sound out the letters to spell the words.  Some of us are using swirly printing to tell our stories, some of us are able to sound out the first letter in words, some of us are copying print to write the words we want and finally some of us are trying to sound out words to write a sentence.  Well done Kindergarten! At arrival centers, we played with our small world bags.  We use the loose parts in the bags along with small animals to practice our oral story telling. We continued to practice our fine motor skills by making a penguin today.   We went to the gym and played with the beach balls and the volleyball nets.
