Monday February 8

Today we were scientists and talked about predictions and observations. We did a science experiment with candy hearts and a variety of liquids (pop, milk, vinegar, oil and water) We discussed what we thought would happen when the candy hearts were dropped into the liquids.

Kindergarten will be making Penguin dioramas at school.  Each child will need to bring some supplies from home to help make this project a success.

We read the story The Day it Rained Hearts and then we made it rain hearts at Eric Harvie.  We became kindness ninjas as we decorated hearts and wrote kind messages on them.  Then we were sneaky like ninjas and we made it rain hearts in the school as we hung our heart messages up for all to enjoy.

Home reading was sent home today.  Due to the long weekend, home reading will not be due at school until Thursday February 18th.  This will also be when library books are due back.

Please note: There is no school Thursday Feb 10, Friday February 11 and Monday February 15.

Please send your child to school on Tuesday February 16 with 1 box (a shoe box or a clean pizza box).  Please talk with your child if they want to make a winter scene for their penguin or a warm climate scene for their penguin.  After your child has decided which scene they would like to build, please include some of the following items that your child could use to build their scene that correspond to the season (warm or cold) that your child will be building.  Please label your child's box with their name and put their additional supplies inside.  Please do not send the items early to school as we a limited storage space.  Thank you!

Some examples of additional materials could include: styrofoam, pompoms, cotton balls or cotton batting, jewels or gems, foam snowflakes, small toy penguins, small rocks, buttons, egg cartons, clean bottle caps, construction paper, cellophane paper, be creative when looking around the house for additional materials.

At school each child will be making a plasticine penguin to add to their scene.  Students will also have access to paint, glue and additional supplies at school to use.  Please see the photos below to provide some inspiration.

Please continue to practice the penguin song for our upcoming Peace Assembly.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvdngdI506U

Mrs. Mask's class had the opportunity to play with some magnetic toys that Mrs. Campbell's Grade 1/2 class made during their inquiry into magnets. They created magnetic toys and our class got to test them out! We had so much fun using the toys today. We will get to try out all the games this week and Mrs. Conley's class will have the opportunity next week to play.
